Dr. Richard M. Peer has been a member of the Buffalo Medical Group since August 1977. He is the immediate past president of The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), an organization that represents the interest of physicians and patients to ensure quality health care for all.

Dr. Peer has spent most of his personal and professional life in the Buffalo and Rochester areas. From 1991-1995, he was chief of the vascular surgery division at the Buffalo General Hospital, and continues there as an associate surgeon. Dr. Peer also is an associate professor at surgery at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where he has taught since 1977.

Dr. Peer no longer sees patients, but continues to read vascular scans as part of his medical practice with BMG.

A cum laude graduate of Canisius College, he earned his medical degree with Distinction in Research in 1969 at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Peer completed his internship and residency at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was chief resident.

Throughout his career, Dr. Peer has worked actively on behalf of organized medicine. He was a founder and first president of the Western New York Physicians Executive Group, and has served as president of the Buffalo Academy of Medicine, the Buffalo Surgical Society, the Erie County Medical Society, and the Western New York Vascular Society. He also has served as a delegate to the American Medical Association, and recently was appointed to the AMA’s council on long-range planning and development. Dr. Peer is a member of the MSSNY Commission on Education and its Bio-terrorism Task Force, and has toured the state to teach physicians bio-terrorism preparedness.

Dr. Peer and his wife, Janet, who reside in Williamsville, have three adult children.
