Colon and rectal surgeons are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of colon, rectal and anal diseases. They have completed advanced training in this field following full training in general surgery.
The Buffalo Medical Group has six board certified colon rectal surgeons who limit their practices exclusively to this field. These physicians take an active role in teaching students and residents through their affiliation with the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. BMG colon and rectal surgeons evaluate and treat a wide range of anal and rectal conditions, usually on an outpatient basis. Colon disorders that are commonly managed by BMG colon and rectal surgeons include diverticulitis, colon polyps, colon cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, bleeding disorders of the colon, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and problems with colostomies.
The members of the department also are experts in the complex surgical procedures utilized in the treatment of rectal cancer and ulcerative colitis. These procedures are designed to preserve the anal sphincter, therefore preventing permanent colostomies. With recent advances in surgical technology, these surgeons now offer to select patients surgical procedures performed using minimally invasive techniques or laparoscopic assisted techniques. This allows for smaller incisions, less postoperative pain and decreased recovery time.
The Colon and Rectal Surgery Department offers complete anal and rectal physiologic evaluation for patients with functional problems related to the rectum and anus. Results from these sophisticated tests are used to formulate appropriate medical and or surgical treatment plans. BMG colon and rectal surgeons also are very involved in the screening and early detection of colon and rectal cancer, and perform colonoscopies routinely for these purposes. The surgeons have medical privileges at all major hospitals in the Buffalo Metropolitan area.
