General Surgery is a specialty that treats a number of conditions, benign and malignant, that involve intra-abdominal organs (stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas and liver); the breast, endocrine glands (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenals), and skin lesions (cancer, melanoma, cysts). Hernias in the abdominal wall and groin also are treated by specialists in General Surgery.
Laparoscopy is used in surgery for some of the conditions listed above, including gall-bladder surgery, hernia repairs, splenectomy and GERD. For breast cancer and melanomas the surgeons have expertise in sentinel lymph node biopsies. The surgeons also perform colonoscopies (screening and diagnostic).
The Division specialists include a Board Certified General Surgeon who also is certified in surgical critical care;
a Board Certified General Surgeon who has a special interest in breast
surgery, and a Board Certified surgeon with sub specialty training in
surgery of the liver, bile duct, and pancreas.
