Dr. Andre L. Lopez, who was associated with The Brody School of
Medicine at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, for
10 years, joined the Buffalo Medical Group Department of Family
Medicine in August 2007.
A clinical associate
professor at The Brody School of Medicine, Dr. Lopez was director of
the Family Medicine residency program in 2007 after
serving as the associate director of the program from 2003 to 2006.
In addition, he had been a member of the Medical Staff at University
Health Systems of Eastern Carolina Pitt County Memorial Hospital,
Greenville, since 2000. At Pitt County Memorial, he worked in both
ambulatory and inpatient settings, gaining extensive experience in
caring for acutely ill patients.
Dr. Lopez is a strong advocate for evidence
based medicine (EBM) which combines clinical expertise and clinical
research results to provide optimum patient care. He also is a
proponent for the use electronic medical records technology to
enhance the coordination of patient care and to better monitor the
quality of care.
In addition to his clinical practice, his
academic responsibilities at The Brody School of Medicine included
teaching Family Medicine residents, medical school and physician
assistant students. Among his major achievements were the
development of an evidence based medicine curriculum; creation of a
Family Medicine evidence based medicine resource web page, and
development of a chronic disease management curriculum.
A Western New York native, Dr. Lopez earned his
medical degree at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences in 1997, and completed a three-year residency in
Family Medicine at The Brody School of Medicine in 2000.
He is board certified by the American Board of
Family Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Family
Physicians, the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, and the
Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors.
His wife, Nicole Leigh Symons, MD, also is a Family Medicine
physician with BMG and also a native of Western New York.
