June is Men’s Health Month — a time to raise awareness about the unique health challenges men face and encourage proactive care. Many men avoid the doctor unless something feels wrong, but regular screenings and healthy habits can make all the difference in catching problems early and maintaining long-term wellness.
Recommended Screenings by Age
Ages 35-45: At this stage, prevention is key. Men should have regular blood pressure checks, cholesterol screening, and a fasting blood glucose test to monitor for early signs of diabetes. A yearly physical is strongly recommended to ensure no further testing or screening is needed. If you have a family history of heart disease or colon cancer, talk to your provider about early screenings.
Ages 46-55: As risk for chronic disease increases, screenings become even more critical. In addition to continuing the tests above, men should begin colon cancer screenings at age 45. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test may also be considered based on risk factors and a discussion with your doctor. Routine liver and kidney function tests, as well as weight and BMI tracking, can provide insight into metabolic health.
Ages 56-65: This age group should continue previous screenings and add bone density testing if there’s a history of fractures or risk factors for osteoporosis. Eye exams, hearing tests, and immunizations like shingles and pneumonia vaccines also become more important. Prostate and colorectal cancer screening should be ongoing based on personal and family history as well as results of previous testing.
Age 65 and Older: Maintaining independence and quality of life is the priority. Annual wellness visits, cognitive screening, fall risk assessment, and continued cancer screenings (as appropriate) are essential. Screenings for abdominal aortic aneurysm (especially for former smokers) and continued monitoring for chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure are crucial.
Tips for Year-Round Health
Stay Active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Walking, biking, or swimming can all help maintain heart and bone health.
Eat Smart: A balanced diet rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports healthy weight and reduces risk for many diseases.
Don’t Skip Sleep: Men often downplay rest, but 7–9 hours of quality sleep is vital for both physical and mental health.
Manage Stress: Prioritize mental health. Talk to a friend, counselor, or professional if you feel overwhelmed.
See Your Doctor: Regular checkups aren’t just for when something feels wrong—they’re your best tool for staying ahead of health issues.
This June, take charge of your health. A strong, healthy future starts today.
