A key component of the Buffalo Medical Group’s affiliation with Kaleida Health is round-the-clock inpatient medical care provided by the BMG Hospitalist Division at Buffalo General and Millard Fillmore Suburban hospitals.
Hospitalists represent the fastest growing specialty in medicine today.
The Buffalo Medical Group is proud to have been a leader in this field since
the inception of our hospitalist program in 1999. The BMG hospitalist team
consists of full-time board-certified physicians, who have the training, expertise and experience to deliver timely and comprehensive care,
and help hospitalized patients cope with the complexities of today’s health care environment.
After a BMG primary care physician (PCP) arranges an inpatient admission, a hospitalist, in partnership with the PCP, assumes responsibility for the patient’s care. Throughout the hospitalization, the hospitalist maintains close contact with the PCP to keep him or her informed about the patient’s status.
Once a patient is under the care of a hospitalist, a thorough history and
physical exam will be undertaken, followed by a detailed review of laboratory tests, radiological studies, and office records. This process is repeated frequently (at least daily) until the issues that led to the admission are resolved satisfactorily or explained. As the admission concludes, records from the inpatient stay are automatically transmitted to the referring doctor, followed by a personal communication with the physician(s) who will provide the ongoing outpatient care.
A growing role for BMG hospitalists is in the realm of consultative care. BMG inpatient physicians routinely provide assistance to their physician colleagues
in such fields as orthopedics, general surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and obstetrics/gynecology. When a patient is admitted for one of these specialty services, hospitalists often are asked to assist in the management of underlying general medical conditions, pain issues, or to provide pre- and post-operative care.
For more information about BMG hospital services, or questions in general on
this exciting new field, please contact your primary health care professional,
or call one of the hospitalists directly at (716) 630-1000.
The internet also contains a considerable amount of information on the role of hospitalists in patient care. The Society for Hospital Medicine web site http://www.hospitalmedicine.org and the FAQ link is an excellent resource for anyone who wishes to learn more about hospitalists.
